Mets and Yankees Busy This Offseason, but Will They Get Who They Want?

So far this MLB off-season, the teams in New York have been very busy.  The Yankees' move this week may have been the biggest. In a three-team deal, the Yankees acquired Curtis Granderson, formerly a member of the Detroit Tigers, while the Diamondbacks acquired Edwin Jackson and former Yankee Ian Kennedy.  The Tigers acquired Phil Coke and top Diamondbacks prospects Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth.  The Tigers also acquired Austin Jackson. Though Granderson is a good power hitter, he is not the best fielder in left.  This season, Granderson hit 30 home runs ...

The Market for Chien Ming Wang

A few years ago, Chien Ming Wang was considered the Yankees' ace. Now, Wang isn't even a Yankee. In fact, after being non tendered yesterday, Wang has no team: Wang, 30, was a stalwart on Yankees teams that always seemed to be short of enough quality pitching, using his sinkerball to win 19 games in 2006 and 2007. As the Yankees struggled to find stability in its starting rotation, Wang stood out as the closest the team had to an ace, his success vaulting him to superstardom in his native Taiwan. But ...

Detroit Tigers Fans: Blinded By Curtis Granderson’s Smile?

He was the home grown star. He was the face of the franchise. He was one of the Tigers ’ “untouchable” players. But should he have been? If I can, allow me to take off my usual court jester’s hat and play Devil’s Advocate for a moment. I’ve spend several days reading hundreds of comments and articles from Tiger fans who are upset over the trade of Curtis Granderson to the Yankees . Although there are some in favor of the trade, most seem to ...

MLB Issues: A Second Mortgage To Go to the Ballgame Today?

This year, we had a replay of the 1950 classic, the last time the Phillies and Yankees met for the World Championship, with both teams showing off their shiny new ballparks.  Tickets, brews, and food cost the equivalent of your first born male child during the regular season, and both organizations stuck the needle in deeper for postseason play.  The result of this plundering of the fan base?  Most fervent fans were at best reduced to the nose bleed seats, other than those few with access to the privileged castes.  I guess those ...

MLB 9s: New York Yankees—Yogi, The Babe, A-Rod, Mickey, and Jeter Shine

If you were looking to choose your greatest ever Yankee lineup, based on single-season offensive performances, where would you start? For a team that would field 15 Hall of Famers and dozens more legends, it is no easy task. Were Joe McCarthy's Yankees from the mid-to-late 1930s superior to the players that Casey Stengel managed in the early 1950s? How do today's stars—Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez—compare to the heroes of decades past—names like Phil Rizutto, Babe Ruth, and Yogi Berra? Is power more important than speed? Is the past worth more the present? It all ...

Yanks Take Care of Business at Winter Meetings

This year's winter meetings seemed to be a lot more active than last year's, didn't they? This may have had a lot to do with its location. In 2008, the event was held in Vegas. This surely presently all sorts of obstacles in terms of getting actual work done. I'm not sure Scott Boras ever ducked out of Spearmint Rhino long enough to hold his annual messianic press conference. And then there were the rumors about the Hendricks Brothers, a young redhead, and a snapper fish. I don't even want to know what Brian ...

New York Yankees: Getting Ready for the Halladays?

Hello once again! Well, the hot stove fire really sparked and crackled for the Yanks during the General Managers' Winter Meetings this past week, so let's do a quick recap of the biggest deal made, so far, in this offseason.   Three Team Trade between the Yanks, D'Backs, and Tigers Here is how it broke down for the Yanks: New York received OF Curtis Granderson from the Tigers, while shipping out Ian Kennedy to the D'Backs, and trading prospect Austin Jackson, and LHP Phil Coke, to the Tigers. Analysis: The winners of this trade ...

Johnny Damon’s Return To the New York Yankees Is a Must for 2010

He's making a list. Checking it twice. Gonna find out who is terrible or nice. Santa Cashman is coming to town, Santa Cashman is coming to town. Yes, I am in the Christmas spirit, and the Yankees are too, because they have begun their holiday shopping. Unlike us, who shop for December 25, Brian Cashman is shopping for next season and beyond. Cashman had a proven center fielder with a decent contract on his list. A three-way trade for Curtis Granderson took care of that need. Cashman also needed a reliable arm who is the most winning ...

Ben Sheets: The New York Yankees’ Possible “Plan C” for the Starting Rotation

Good starting pitching wins championships. 2009 was a great example of that as the New York Yankees had three top of the line starters with CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte. The Yankees are looking to add to that rotation this winter. We all know they have been negotiating with the agent of John Lackey and have been discussing a possible trade for Roy Halladay. However, what happens if the Yankees lose out on both Halladay and Lackey? This is what we will call the "Plan C." Rich Harden signed with the Rangers. Randy ...

Yankees Bullpen Departures: First Phil Coke, Now Brian Bruney

New York Yankees' General Manager Brian Cashman appears to be giving the New York Yankees bullpen a face-lift. Already faced with the uncertainty of whether or or not Phil Hughes and/or Joba Chamberlain will rejoin the starting rotation, Cashman has unloaded relievers Phil Coke and Brian Bruney. Coke went to the Tigers in Wedesday's deal that landed Curtis Granderson in the Bronx. Today, Bruney was dealt to D.C. in exchange for Jamie Hoffman, a 25-year-old outfielder who hit .182 in 14 games for Joe Torre's Dodgers in 2009. ...
