Report: Vazquez Headed to Yankees For Melky, Prospects

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Atlanta Braves will trade Javier Vazquez to the New York Yankees for centerfielder Melky Cabrera, lefty reliever Michael Dunn, and Arodys Vizcaino. Vazquez had a career year in 2009, with a 2.87 ERA, 5.41 K/BB ratio, and 2.77 FIP. Vazquez, who was acquired by the Yankees in 2004, has since pitched for Arizona, the White Sox, and most recently, the Braves. Cabrera had arguably his best season in 2009, hitting .274 with a .331 wOBA and playing a solid defensive centerfield. Once one of the Yankees' ...

New York Yankees Appear Close To Acquiring Another Starter

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Yankees may be close to acquiring a starter: Yankees working very hard tonight on deal for starting pitcher. Remember that they came close to deal for Aaron Harang in summer. The Yankees have been busy this offseason, already landing Curtis Granderson and Nick Johnson, and have since turned their attention to the starting rotation. They now appear to be very much in the market for another starter to add to the rotation of CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, Andy Pettitte, and one of Joba Chamberlain/Phillip Hughes. Assuming they ...

Yankee Swap: Defending Champs Inquire about Cubs’ Carlos Zambrano

New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman intends to add a starting pitcher before the new year, according to the New York Post. As the Post reports, if he and Chicago Cubs GM Jim Hendry can find common ground, that pitcher may be Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano. Before this rather salacious rumor gains too much steam, it should be noted that the roadblocks to an eventual trade are many. First of all, Zambrano, 28, has a no-trade clause that could allow him to block any deal. In the past, he has been vehement ...

An Important Offseason For Yankee’s Brian Cashman

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has the most unique job in professional sports. He possesses the ability to spend as much money as he wants without consequence. The Yankees continue to trot out the most expensive team in baseball. Last year, their payroll was nearly $60 million more than its nearest competitor. Oakland, San Diego, Florida and Pittsburgh started the year with sub $60 million teams. Cashman has very few hairs on the top of his head, though. The Yankees are expected to win the World Series every season. There’s no ...

Why Are the New York Yankees Obtaining Nick Johnson?

Why on earth do the New York Yankees want Nick Johnson? Being frustrated at talks with outfielder Johnny Damon is not a legitimate reason to sign an overpaid injury-plagued journeyman. Johnson started his big league career with the Yankees in 2001, when he tipped the scales higher than his batting average of .194. He stayed in New York for three years and never put in a full season. His best year was 2003 when he hit .284 with 14 HR and 47 RBI. He averaged .254 with 10 HR and 38 ...

Would It Matter If Derek Jeter Was Gay?

Let me start by saying that I'm one of the biggest Derek Jeter fans in the world. I have followed Jeter since his first days in early 1996 and continue to be one of his strongest supporters, both on and off the field. This article is in no way a knock on Derek or an attempt to infer that he may be gay. A lot of Derek Jeter haters like to insult him by saying that he "drinks wine coolers" or "sucks A-Rod" as the Red Sox Nation shirts would read. What if ...

The New York Baseball All-Decade Team: Position Players

We are only a few weeks until it is the end of this decade, I was thinking and I decided that I would make the New York Baseball All-Decade Team. This decade was great for the Yankees in winning two World Series but not great for the Mets in only making the playoffs a couple of times. In fact, in the first World Series of the decade the two New York teams faced eachother in the Subway Series, The Yankees won the series in five games with Derek Jeter being named the ...

Jason Bay And Johnny Damon Find Themselves In Similar Situations

There are a lot of differences between Johnny Damon and Jason Bay. Damon is left-handed and Bay is right-handed. Damon has two World Series rings and Bay has zero. Damon’s game is based primarily on speed and Bay’s game is based primarily on power. Damon is flamboyant and likes to speak his mind, while Bay speaks softly and carries a big stick. Bay and Damon have more similarities than you think, despite some differences. Damon and Bay are both left fielders. They were both a part of Red Sox Nation. Damon ...

2010 New York Yankees Younger, Cheaper, Better Than 2009 Team

There is much teeth-gnashing among Yankees fans as they mourn the departure of Hideki Matsui and probable loss of Johnny Damon .  Even here at the Bleacher Report, writers accuse management of penny-pinching at the expense of the team on the field .  These writers are wrong.  Brian Cashman's moves have made the 2010 Yankees younger, cheaper, and better than the championship 2009 team. To evaluate the Yankees' offseason so far, I will concentrate on their four biggest acquisitions and losses.  The first is the Granderson trade, the second is ...

Milton Bradley Traded to Mariners; Johnny Damon’s Tenure with Yankees Over?

The Seattle Mariners, having already signed third baseman Chone Figgins and acquired starting pitcher Cliff Lee this offseason, took a huge gamble, trading the horrid Carlos Silva to the Cubs for the dysfunctional Milton Bradley. They hope they don't get this version. Milton Bradley has had his problems. He tore his ACL aggressively arguing with umpire Mike Winters as a member of the San Diego Padres in September 2007, and attempted to confront Kansas City Royals announcer Ryan Lefebvre following a 2008 contest while with the Texas Rangers because ...
