How Did Tony Kubek Break His Neck?

Mary Lynne Munroe roots against the New York Yankees as much as the next woman, but even she felt sorry for Tony Kubek when he was hit in the throat by a ground ball that took a bad hop in the 1960 World Series. Kubek suffered a neck injury that might have led to his early retirement. Bill Virdon's Ground Ball Now don't get me wrong. The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates were a better team ...

2010 MLB Preview: What Happened to the New York Yankees’ Youth Movement?

When the New York Yankees won their 27th World Series crown in November, they did so with a 35-year-old designated hitter, a 36-year-old left fielder, a 37-year-old catcher, and a closer who would turn 40 just a few days after the Series ended.   Two of those guys are gone now and two return a little older.   The Yankee infield will not change for 2010 as Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter offer not only consistency but unmatched talent around the horn.   Teixeira will turn 30 during Spring Training. Cano turned ...

Starting Joba Chamberlain Over Phil Hughes Is a No-Brainer for the Yankees

Washington DC By Patrick Read As a blustery winter-cold blanketed the entire nation in snow—reminding all how bone-chilling cold global warmth can get—the ever expanding Yankee Universe has been once again set ablaze with mounting pressure over what’s come to be known as, “the debate.” And minions of Phil Hughes E-fans have been chiming in, promoting the idea that he be named a Yankee starter over fellow young teammate and Yankee phenom, Joba Chamberlain . Someone tell the Hughes fans to be more patient—because in comparison—it is clear that Joba Chamberlain is more starter-ready ...

New York Yankees: Projecting the 2010 Roster

The winter offseason is just about over. We're about to get back to baseball. For those who haven't had much to watch since the Super Bowl, and aren't into college or pro basketball, you are about to get your baseball season going again. This past November, the Yankees got back on top of the baseball world by winning the 2009 World Series over the Phillies, the previous champions, in a very competitive series. We've seen some changes to the roster this past winter. There will be some new faces and even some old ...

Yankees Sign Dustin Moseley, Invite Him and Four Others to Camp

The Yankees have signed 28-year-old right handed pitcher Dustin Moseley to a minor league deal, and invited him to spring training as a non-roster invitee. The Yankees have also announced that they have invited four of their other minor leaguers to camp. The other minor leaguers are infielders Brandon Laird and Jorge Vazquez, as well as right handed pitchers DJ Mitchell and Ryan Pope  That brings the amount of players in camp to 65 (the full squad won’t report until Feb. 24).   Here is the press release from the Yankees: INF Brandon ...

Joba Chamberlain at Risk for Breakdown According to Verducci Effect

Young arms are becoming a more and more precious commodity in baseball, and the Yankees, with Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes, have two of the better ones in baseball. Protecting those arms has become paramount. That’s why the Yankees enacted the “Joba Rules” last year, and in 2010 we may even see the Phil-osophy. It’s about keeping Joba and Hughes healthy and out on the mound. Last year the Yankees received a fair amount of criticism for not letting Joba just pitch and were blamed for his poor second half. But ...

October 1965: Yankee Stadium Was Deserted

Bryan Kashmen passed by Yankee Stadium in early October, 1965. The ball park that would be destroyed following the 2008 season was eerily silent. For the first time since 1959, there would be no World Series games at Yankee Stadium. Bryan felt so good. Tired of the Yankees in the World SeriesI couldn't root for the New York Yankees for many reasons that I will not discuss in detail. Let's just say that they had great ...

Ralph Houk: Don’t Blame the Manager

Bryan Kashmen thinks that the only reason the New York Yankees rehired manager Johnny Keane three weeks before the end of the 1965 season was to avoid embarrassment. Yankees' management knew that that the team had deteriorated with time, and that firing Keane would result in too much bad publicity since he could hardly be blamed for what happened. Ralph Houk's Press Conference The New York Yankees were in sixth place, one game away from ...

Brett Gardner Daily Update No. 14

Joe Girardi sat down for his first full blown press conference at the New York Yankee Spring Training facility in Tampa today, one day before all pitchers and catchers are to report for the start of the new season. "First of all guys, let me just say, that because my time is limited to about 90 minutes for this press conference, I am only going to be taking questions on Brett Gardner and issues related to Gardy. So confine your questions to those areas, please." AP reporter, Jim Smith, raised his hand ...

Is New York Yankees’ Robinson Cano the Second Best Second Baseman?

I know I’m in the minority with my ranking of Robinson Cano (see my 2B rankings here ), but I believe he has the ability to challenge for the batting title. Not to mention he should be among the leaders at second base in runs, HRs, and RBIs. Cano is a notoriously slow starter, hitting .271 in April and May and .322 the rest of the way. His OPS is also much lower in those two months: .705 in April, .713 in May, .803 in June, .903 in ...
