Why Mauer the Twin Must Die and His Evil Twin Yankee Joe Must Live

I'm no expert. But I know this time next year, Joe Mauer will be a Yankee. For all the warm and fuzzy commentary about Joe Mauer needing to remain a Minnesota Twin for the sake of preserving the hopes of small-market teams everywhere, there is an underlying ominous implication that if he doesn't he will be branded baseball's all-time biggest sellout and eviscerated by pure-hearted baseball fans everywhere. The arguments for why Mauer should remain with the Twins are many and don't require another recitation here. Alleged experts of every stripe have ...

HGH Doctor Did Treat Alex Rodriguez

According to Rob Gillies of the AP, the doctor under investigation in connection to Alex Rodriguez said he treated, but only prescribed him anti-imflammatories and not HGH. Dr. Anthony Galea also told The Associated Press an assistant who was stopped at the U.S.-Canadian border in Buffalo, N.Y., last year was carrying only a minuscule amount of HGH—which Galea said was for his own use. The doctor reiterated that he has never given the drug to an athlete. “I only brought enough for her to do two injections into me because I was ...

Goose Gossage Wasn’t Half the Pitcher Mariano Rivera Is

Baseball Hall of Famer Goose Gossage claimed this past weekend that New York Yankees icon Mariano Rivera is not the best relief pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB).   “I think he (Rivera) is a tremendous relief pitcher,” said Gossage, a nine-time All-Star who played his last game for the Seattle Mariners in 1994. “He’s the best, current-day, modern reliever. When I was inducted into the Hall of Fame, I was told that I had 53 saves with seven-plus outs. I was told that Mariano had one and Trevor ...

MLB: Analyzing the Yankees Lineup

Let’s take a look at the potential for run scoring in this year’s version of the Yankees lineup. We’ve done this in the past, even a couple of times this offseason, but now that spring has started and we have a better idea of what their lineup will look like let’s do it again. For this lineup projection I’ve used CHONE projections as well as Baseball Musings’ lineup analysis tool . Here is the line the lineup I see the Yankees going with on opening day: Derek Jeter – SS Nick Johnson – ...

Jermaine Dye Might Interest Yankees if Nick Johnson Is Hurt

Nick Johnson returned to the Yankees lineup today as the DH and went 0-for-2 with a walk and told reporters after the game that “Things feel fine. No grabbing. No nothing. I loosened up before. Felt nothing.” That’s good news for the Yankees, who no doubt cringed when they heard that he tweaked his back last week. It might not have been a big deal, but it was a painful reminder that Johnson has a brutal injury history . People, myself included, even said that Yankees GM Brian Cashman probably questioned himself ...

More Tests Coming for New York Yankee Catcher Francisco Cervelli

According to George King of the New York Post , after seeing the team doctor yesterday, Yankees backup catcher Francisco Cervelli plans to meet with a neurologist this afternoon. Cervelli is recovering from a concussion he sustained after being hit by a pitch in the head the other day. “I talked to him and he said he felt good,” manager Joe Girardi said. “After he sees the neurologist, he can do some light stuff at the ballpark. (Today) is a big day for him. I want to hear what the neurologist has ...

With Ian Kennedy, Did the New York Yankees Give Up Too Soon?

The Yankees drafted Ian Kennedy in the first round of the 2006 draft, and by the end of the 2007 season he was not only pitching in the majors, but over three starts he was pitching brilliantly. He pitched so well, in fact, that it earned him a spot in the 2008 rotation coming out of spring training. Kennedy struggled in the big leagues that year though and was sent back down to the minors. The Yankees still had high hopes for him and called him back up in August, but after ...

The New York Yankees Had to Trade Roger Maris

Geoff Britches remembers when his St. Louis Cardinals acquired the services of Roger Maris prior to the 1967 season. He responds to a recent article whose position is that the New York Yankees should not traded Roger. Roger Maris Would Not Play for the Yankees Roger Maris would not have returned to the New York Yankees after the 1966 season. The Yankees were roundly criticized for trading Maris to the St. Louis Cardinals for Charlie ...

Brett Gardner Daily Update: March 8, 2010

The New York Yankees lost a spring training game to the Minnesota Twins yesterday, 11-0. Brett Gardner started and got one hit in three times at bat. His hit came on a bunt. The bunt was fielded by the pitcher, whose throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. Gardner's speed was the critical element in the play because the pitcher had no time to make an accurate throw with Gardner speeding down the line. Today, on the New York Yankees' home page and in the New York Daily News, there were articles about ...

If Phil Hughes Wins Job, Joba Rules Will Have Been for Nothing

Young arms seem more important today than ever and the Yankees have tried very hard to take care of their young arms, specifically Joba Chamberlain —I’m talking about the Joba Rules. But have they all been for nothing? It was a question Bernadette Pasley poised on her blog Lady Batting recently: "Joba Chamberlain was on an innings limit last year to preserve his young arm. This year, assuming he wins the 5th starter’s job, he’ll have no innings limit. What if he doesn’t win the job? I was all for the way they ...
