Yankees-A’s Series Preview: Oakland’s Strong Arms Try To Slow Down Yanks

At 9-3, the Yankees have the second-best record in baseball behind the 10-3 Rays, but now New York ventures out of the Bronx for a long nine-game road trip, including six contests on the West Coast. The first three of which are in Oakland, home of the American League West leading Athletics. The A's offense is mediocre, but its pitching is among the best in the game. Oakland leads the AL in ERA (2.90) and OPS against (.655), while ranking second in batting average against (.234), WHIP (1.23) and quality starts (9). Let's ...

New York Yankees Stars Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada Increasing their Hall Chances

If it were up to me, the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown would be filled with nothing but Yankees, but fortunately for everyone else, the process is mostly fair. Two players who have been longtime borderline candidates on the outside looking in, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte, seem to be getting closer to enshrinement these days as they continue to be dominant even as other players their age are fading away. Joel Sherman of the NY Post wrote about the pair and their hall chances this morning: Some players hold on and ...

Javier Vazquez Fixes Mechanical Issue after Two Rough Starts

The Yankees have been doing so well lately, but no matter how good they play there is still going to be a small faction of fans that is just never going to be happy. It’s sad in a way, especially when these fans have latched on to Javier Vazquez and are looking for blood. The reality of the situation is that Vazquez will settle down and pitch well eventually, but in the meantime he has had back-to-back rough outings. That could come to an end soon, though, because he has apparently ...

Old Yankee Stadium Demolition: New Pictures of the Progress in New York

It has been a while since I last put pictures up of the old Yankee Stadium being torn down, so I thought now was as good a time as any. Especially since they have done so much over the past couple of weeks. I must give a tip of my hat to Sliding Into Home , as Greg has kept his readers much more up to date with these pics and I simply stole these from him. The first group of photos were taken this past weekend by Joseph Leotta, and ...

2010 New York Yankees More Balanced

It’s good to be a Yankee fan right now.  The Yankees have won all four series they’ve played, coming off a convincing sweep of a talented young Rangers team.  Their other series wins were against arguably the two other best teams in baseball in the Red Sox and Rays, and against a perennial contender in the Angels. The question now is: How long can they keep this up?  Clearly, there will be low points in the year and the road trip they are about to embark on will provide some possible ...

New York Yankees To be Honored at White House

According to George King of the NY Post, even though it is not yet official, the Yankees are expected to visit the White House on their off-day a week from today. They will be honored for winning last year’s World Series by Barack Obama. Here’s more from King: It hasn’t been made official but the Yankees will spend part of their day off a week from today at the White House, where they will be honored for winning the 2009 World Series by White Sox fan President Obama. It will ...

If It Weren’t New York Yankees Bias, What Was It?

In 1947, Ted Williams won the American League's Triple Crown. He led the league in batting with a .343 average, in home runs with 32, and in RBIs with 114.  Williams had a .499 on base average, a .634 slugging percentage, and drew 162 walks. In 1947, Joe DiMaggio hit .315 with 20 home runs and 97 RBIs. He had a .391 on base average, a .522 slugging percentage and 64 walks. There is no comparison.   The MVP Was the Best Player Lefty Grove was the first Most Valuable Player selected by the Baseball ...

Yankees Winning a Team Effort

Well, it's fun being a Yankee fan these days. The Yankees are currently 9-3, sitting atop the American League East division (albeit tied with the Tampa Bay Rays), with a nice five-game lead over the despised Red Sox and their small fiefdom. Their 69 runs scored and +25 run differential are both best in the AL, though not the best in baseball. Over in the Senior Circuit, the Phillies have scored a whopping 78 runs and both they and the Giants (??!?!) have a slightly better differential than the Yanks, though ...

Brett Gardner Daily Update: April 19, 2010

Brett Gardner did everything he could have possibly done to help the New York Yankees sweep the Texas Rangers in their weekend series. On Friday night, Gardner did not start the game. He came in as a pinch runner and immediately stole second base and then scored a run. On Saturday. Gardner started in left field and went 3-4 hitting in the nine hole. He also scored two runs, drove in one run and stole another base.  All of his hits were infield hits where Gardner used his speed to get on ...
