Notes and Quotes: More on Hughes, the Bullpen, and the Lineup

Things are going as well as you could ever hope for the Yankees this season. They have won each of their first five series this season, the first time they’ve done that since 1926, and are sitting in first place with an 11-3 record. They also have their ace, CC Sabathia , on the mound today as they try to go for their seventh win in a row. Here are some notes and quotes. Notes The major league record for most series victories to open a season is nine. After Sabathia’s near no-no manager Joe Girardi ...

Phil Hughes’ Dominant Performance Brings Back Family Memories in Oakland

Phil Hughes was absolutely dominant on Wednesday night against the Oakland Athletics. He had his best stuff of the season, possibly his career, last night as he came ever so close to no hitting the A's. Hughes' control was terrific. His stuff was electric. The young pitcher took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before giving up an infield single to Eric Chavez on a ball hit up the middle that went off Hughes' forearm. Hughes could not find the ball in time and Chavez was on with the A's first ...

Yankees-A’s: Phil Hughes Flirts with No-Hitter As Yankees Beat A’s 3-1

On Wednesday night, Phil Hughes made his second start of the season against the Oakland A's and was looking for an even stronger performance from his first start. Any stronger of a performance, and you would have thought that it was Ron Guidry and not Hughes pitching on the mound. In case you fell asleep before or during the game and think I am exaggerating, I am not kidding because Hughes in fact, was that good Wednesday night. After a first inning walk to Daric Barton, Hughes retired the next 20 batters in ...

Brett Gardner Daily Update: April 22, 2010

Brett Gardner continues to produce, at least against right handed pitching. In last night's win for the New York Yankees against the Oakland Athletics, Gardner was 2-3 with a walk and a run batted in. What is more, the RBI came with two outs in the ninth. The Yankees held a precarious one-run lead after Phil Hughes had taken a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and Gardner's RBI added an insurance run. Gardner was less impressive in the opening game of the three-game series in Oakland on Tuesday night when he went 0-3 ...

New York Yankees Pitcher Phil Hughes Tosses Seven No-Hit Innings in 3-1 Win

New York Yankees starting pitcher Phil Hughes took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday night, but his no-hit bid was spoiled by the A’s leadoff hitter Eric Chavez who reached on an infield single. Hughes struck out the next batter for his career high 10th strikeout of the game and the Yankees went on to a 3-1 victory over the A's. The infield single that broke up the pitching gem was a weak comebacker that ricocheted off of Hughes, who then ...

Humor: New York Yankee Fans Blame Joe Girardi for Blowing Phil Hughes’ No-Hitter

In a message board storm unlike any seen for weeks, New York Yankees fans set the online world abuzz as they ripped Yankees manager Joe Girardi for costing Phil Hughes a no-hitter. Fans called for Girardi's immediate resignation/firing/tar-and-feathering following the game where Hughes, one of the Yankees' top young pitchers, no-hit the Oakland A's through seven innings, before allowing an infield hit to Eric Chavez in the eighth inning. Within the hour, hundreds of Facebook groups were devoted to the cause, with groups suggesting replacements for Girardi such as Joe Torre, Buck ...

Brian Cashman Gives Xavier Nady World Series Ring Before Game in Flushing

Earlier in the day I wrote about former Yankee pitchers Edwar Ramirez and Chad Gaudin getting their rings yesterday and I wrote that the Yankees really haven’t let everyone know when they’ll be getting their rings. I certainly wasn’t foreshadowing anything, but earlier today Xavier Nady got a nice surprise when the Yankees general manager Brian Cashman showed up at Citi Field before the Cubs, Nady’s current team, took on the Mets and gave him him his ring. Here is more from the AP : Cubs outfielder Xavier Nady received ...

New York Yankees: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

One of the best Clint Eastwood movies from his Western days was "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." Fantastic. Rent it if you have not seen it. In fact, get a bunch of Clint movies one rainy day and park yourself on the couch. This movie title is going to be the same as this Yankee theme. It will be a bi-weekly segment on the most recent Yankee two week stretch of games. Don't look now, Ogre, but despite Javier Vazquez, the Yankees enter Wednesday at 10-3, a half game ahead of Tampa ...

Rumors Swirl of Mark Teixeira Testing Positive for PED

Yesterday there were rumors flying that Mark Teixeira could be the next big name baseball player to be suspended due to performance enhancing drugs. Major League Baseball then made the announcement that it was not Teixeira, but Edinson Volquez of the Reds, that failed a drug test.  A sigh of relief was taken by the New York Yankees organization and fans.  Teixeira laughed off the rumors when he was informed in Oakland yesterday of his possible suspension. It would boggle and perplex people why he would test positive, since he was one of ...

Notes and Quotes: Javier Vazquez, Joba Chamberlain, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher

Good evening Bronx Baseball Daily readers. Some of you might have noticed our lack of updates this morning. First, we didn’t have a game recap because the Yankees' West Coast trip is hard to stay awake for and, in an effort to stay up late last night, I accidentally caused myself to sleep in today. Also, we had some server issues this morning and it may have been hard for people to access the site. But things are good to go now and I’m excited. Actually I am excited ...
