1903 - The Boston Pilgrims top the visiting New York Highlanders by a score of 12-5, with a little help from Umpire Caruthers, who tosses out Highlanders P Jesse Tannehill and 2B Williams for a ball call at home.
1930 - The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers outfielders make only 2 putouts for an record, which has never been equaled. Tiger's hurler George Uhle strikes ...
Mike Mussina once was a dominant pitcher, but never was he more masterful than on the night of Sept. 2, 2001 against the Boston Red Sox, when he came within one strike of pitching the fourth perfect game in Yankees’ history.
Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre noted, as he watched Mussina warm up in the bullpen before the game, that he was taken aback by the sharp drop on Mussina’s curve ball.
"It looked the same as David Wells’ curve ball on May 17, 1998."

The New York Yankees' last World Championship was in 2009.
For many Yankees’ fans, the eight years between World Championships seemed like an eternity of defeats, despite the team being in the playoffs seven times.
Some Yankees’ fans, and of course, Mr. George Steinbrenner, consider the only successful season one in which the Yankees win the final game of the World Series.
It is a position that is frowned upon by most in the politically correct media as well as by most fans. Mr. Steinbrenner and the minority of individuals that agree ...
Last Father's Day I wrote a piece about how dads influenced the way we came to know, watch, and love baseball. While it was well received I still got a lot of flack from my female readers who said, "What about Mom?!?" And while at first I dismissed their comments as jokes I came to realize that they were very right.
It was my mom who drove me to all my little league practices and games.
It was my mom who went to 7-11 to make sure I had extra Gatorade to ...

Yankees catcher, Jorge Posada , has missed the past four games due to a right calf strain. His replacement, Francisco Cervelli has filled in quite nicely. Posada has been the emergency catcher while out, but all indications are that he is likely to return as early as tomorrow (Sunday). Cervelli has been one of the Yankees hottest hitters. So, my question to all you Yankees fans is, what should the lineup look like when Posada does return? If ...
Sports Illustrated featured four members of the New York Yankees on their cover a few weeks ago. Nicknamed “The Core Four,” the members included Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, and Jorge Posada. But anyone can write a story on those guys. You are talking about the top players on arguably the best team in baseball. Seems like a real blatantly obvious and lazy way out in terms of writing a story to me.
I get bashed for being a Yankee fan. I hear the same things over and over. The ...
Ernie Harwell passed away this week. Everyone remembered him for his class and his announcing ability.
Harwell was an announcer who was objective. He credited the opposing player if he hit well or pitched well.
Twins TV play-by-play announcer Dick Bremer mentioned a nice story about Harwell the other day. Harwell expressed his appreciation to Joe Mays for shutting out the Tigers.
Harwell had a great ability of painting the picture well in describing the game. He did it in short words.
Nowadays, it's unheard of.
Most announcers do a shtick where they conduct ...
“Play ground. By the swings. 3 o’clock. Be there or…”
No matter where you sat on the whole brewhaha involving A’s pitcher Dallas Braden and the man we love to hate, a.k.a. Alex Rodriguez, this is pretty much what one has to hear every time the young hurler opens his mouth.
Which is quite often.
Braden didn't care for Rodriguez running across his mound a few weeks ago. OK, fine, even though it's hard to find anyone who had ever heard of that as one of baseball's unwritten rules. ...
(UPDATE 5:43 p.m.) According to those at the game, the rain has died down and it looks like they'll be able to restart the action. (UPDATE 5:10 p.m.) The game is currently being delay in the bottom of the 5th with the Yankees win 6-3. Boston has a man on with two out. CC Sabathia is still on the mound and Victor Martinez was at the plate with a 2-2 count. The FOX weather dude said the delay should last 30-45 minutes...Updates coming. Greg's Note: Sorry ...
