Phil Hughes Making Spring Competition Seem Silly

Back in Spring Training , the Yankees put Phil Hughes into a competition with other pitchers like Joba Chamberlain , Sergio Mitre, and Alfredo Aceves. The four pitchers competed to see who would be the Yankees fifth starter. Obviously Hughes won the job and since then, he is making it seem like there never should have been a competition. It's tough to say Hughes has been the Yankees best starter, because most of them have been pitching extremely well this season. You can however say Hughes is ...

Yankees Sign Tim Redding

The Yankees have signed Tim Redding to a minor league contract. Redding, 32, who was pitching for the Colorado Rockies's Triple-A affiliate but was released yesterday morning. So far this season for Colorado Springs he is 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 25 innings. He's now headed to Scranton. This is obviously a depth move for the SWB Yankees rotation. The only way he sees major league time with the Yankees is if there are significant injuries to the ...

Bonderman (1-2) Phil Hughes improved to 5-0 on the season with another fantastic start. This time he threw seven innings of scoreless ball, allowing just five hits, one walk, and struck out eight. Once again, Hughes threw a steady mix of fastballs and cutters to overpower the Tigers lineup. ...

New York Yankees Turn on the Jets Late, Split Double-Header

As the Yankees broke their first three game losing streak of the season, Phil Hughes just kept on rolling. After a Brett Gardner single and steal of second in the first inning, Alex Rodriguez singled him in with two outs. In the third with one out, Derek Jeter walked and stole second, and was driven in by Mark Teixeira , again with two outs. Meanwhile, it was smooth sailing for Phil Hughes right along through seven. The Yanks broke it open in the eighth as Robinson Cano led off and ...

Yankees-Tigers Game Two: Yankees Rebound With Shutout to Earn Split

After being held scoreless earlier in the day, New York responded with their own shutout in an 8-0 triumph over Detroit Wednesday evening at Comerica Park. The teams split the day-night doubleheader with the Tigers winning the afternoon affair, 2-0. With the win, New York ended a season-high three-game losing streak. Detroit’s two runs in the bottom of the sixth in the first game were the only two Tiger runs scored in the doubleheader. Phil Hughes (5-0) put together another impressive outing and lowered his ERA ...

Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays—Oh My! The Twins’ Critical Road Trip

Championships are not won or lost in May, but if the Minnesota Twins plan on making a serious playoff run and contend for the World Series this year, the next seven games could tell us plenty. The Twins embark on a three-city road trip with three games against the Yankees and two each at Toronto and Boston. Since 2002, when Ron Gardenhire became manager, the Minnesota Twins are 68-104 against the Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays—a lowly .395 winning percentage. This is  150 points lower than Gardenhire's overall winning percent of .546 over his eight seasons as the Twins' skipper.    On ...

Javier Vazquez Finally Has Strong Start, Loses Anyway

Javier Vazquez got his first quality start of the season and it was a good one, as he held the Tigers to just two runs and five hits, all singles, but still got the loss because he’s Javier Vazquez the offense was shutdown by Rick Porcello. Don’t get me wrong, this was not a lights-out dominant start by Vazquez, but typically if you are getting starts like this out of your No. 4 starter then things should go well for your team. Like I said though, all of the hits Vazquez ...

Javier Vazquez Isn’t Great, but Maybe Good Enough

Javier Vazquez didn't exactly win his most recent start against the Detroit Tigers. However, he pitched a seven-inning quality start, giving up only two runs in the sixth for the wrong end of a 2-0 tally. It's as well as he has pitched all season. That's including his nominally victorious 5.1-inning, three-run effort against the light-hitting Oakland As. More to the point, it was about as well as Vazquez pitched most of last season, except for four of his last six games in which he pitched three seven-inning shutout starts and ...

Yankees-Tigers, Game One: Rick Porcello Outduels Javier Vasquez in Tigers Win

Rick Porcello tossed seven scoreless innings and out-pitched Javier Vasquez to lead Detroit to a 2-0 win over New York Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park. It was the first game of a doubleheader. Detroit has won two straight against New York after losing seven of their last eight games against the Yankees. New York was shutout for the first time since a 6-0 loss at Toronto on Sept. 4, 2009.   Porcello (3-3), who entered the game with a 7.50 ERA, limited the Yankees to four ...
