Minnesota Twins-New York Yankees: Rodriguez’s Grand Slam Helps Yanks Double Up

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Alex Rodriguez’s 19th career grand slam gave New York a lead they would not relinquish in an 8-4 win over Minnesota Friday night at Yankee Stadium.   Joba Chamberlain (1-1) struck out the side in the eighth inning to earn the win. Scott Baker (4-3) suffered the loss despite striking out nine in six innings. Minnesota’s struggles at Yankee Stadium continued. Including last year’s postseason, the Twins have lost 11 straight games in New York. Their last win in the Bronx was a 6-2 ...

Mid-May MLB Power Rankings

The Double G Sports Expert Panel has been polled once again to come up with our Major League Baseball Power Rankings for May. This is the second power rankings release of this season as we did a very early one in Mid-April. You can see those rankings here . For this months rankings, there was plenty of movement up and down the ranks. The Tampa Bay Rays received every first place vote this month. The biggest mover was the San Diego Padres   as ...

The New York Yankees’ Future Ace and Catcher

There's no doubt the New York Yankees has had some pretty good prospects over the years: Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, and Derek Jeter. These days' prospects are Jesus Montero, Francisco Cervelli, Austin Jackson (who left via trade), and Phil Hughes. Austin Jackson was supposed to be the starting center-fielder, but Brian Cashman traded him for Curtis Granderson, who is now injured. Jackson is thriving as the leadoff guy as a Detroit Tiger. Brian Cashman kept all four players as they were coming up with the Core Four. This time around, will ...

Does American Sport Follow the American Dream?

This may seem like a strange idea to think of in the land of the free (and the home of the brave), but the wide world of sports in America could be termed as the land of supporting Communism. Could a country that is based on free market economics and laissez-faire attitude be equated to be the same as the dreaded “reds under the bed"? Just look at the definition of Communism (from Latin communis = "common"): a socioeconomic and political ideology, that promotes the establishment of ...

Yankees-Twins Preview: ALDS Rematch Could Be ALDS Preview

In the midst of their worst offensive slump of the season and having loss four of five, the Yankees return home to open up a seven-game, three-team homestand against the American League Central-leading Minnesota Twins. The Yanks and Twins enter their three-game set with identical 22-12 records, good for second best in the Majors behind the Rays and tied with the Padres. Like New York, Minnesota has done it with a mix of good hitting and solid pitching. The Twins lead the AL with a .277 batting average and are second with ...

Ivan Nova: What Do You Think of Him?

Ivan Nova has always been an interesting prospect to me. He’s usually received glowing reports from scouts, but his numbers generally haven’t been there in the minors and his peripherals, like walk rate and strikeout rate, haven’t really been there either. In his defense, like I said, he does get good scouting reports, he’s a big guy at 6′4″, he throws hard in the mid-90’s, and has been on the younger side at each level he has pitched. The reason for his good scouting reports is the velocity of his fastball and ...

NY Yankees Notes: Jeter, Sunday’s Starter, Other Injuries

Make sure you don’t miss my article on Phil Hughes and the importance patience plays when producing young pitchers. Here are a few other notes for today: Derek Jeter was hit on the elbow and left pinky finger by Justin Verlander in the fifth inning yesterday. After the game Jeter said he was fine and doesn’t expect to miss anytime, but manager Joe Girardi might hold him out a game or two just to be safe anyway. Girardi on Jeter: “He said he’s fine. My guess is it’s going ...

Phil Hughes Shows That Patience Pays Off

One thing I’ve heard and read a lot over the past couple of days—people saying that they were wrong about Phil Hughes. I’ve read that they didn’t think he could ever be this good and that they are glad the Yankees held on to him when they had advocated that he be traded for Johan Santana or Roy Halladay. Well I’m not here to say I told you so, but I do want to point out that with young pitchers fans and members of the media are far too impatient. In ...

Yanks Return Home, Hopefully With Some Bats

The New York Yankees are returning home today to start a three game series with the Minnesota Twins. The Yankees just finished a four game series with the Detroit Tigers in which they lost three of the four. It was a rather embarrassing four game series for the Yankees. You can blame it squarely on the lineup. The Yankees offense disappeared in this series, with the exception of one single inning in their lone win. The blame can be spread throughout, as just about the entire lineup is now in a slump. ...

New York Yankees: First Black American League MVP? Elston Howard

The National League had Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Willie Mays, Henry Aaron, Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson, and Maury Wills. The American League had nobody for 13 years. After the 1963 season, the American League finally had Elston Howard. The New York Yankees' catcher was the first black player to become the American League's Most Valuable Player. "We're Going to Make a Catcher Out of You" When he left the army in 1953, Elston Howard reported to the Yankees' farm team at Lake Wales, Florida. Yankees' scout ...
