I have to admit that a radio appearance and the debut of Stephen Strasburg took up most of my attention last night, but that didn’t stop the Yankees from beating up on the Orioles.
They won 12-7 behind a grand slam from Curtis Granderson and a hard fought performance by Phil Hughes.
Here are some notes:
Hughes improved to 8-1 with a 2.71 ERA on the season. An all-star game appearance might be in his future.
Nick Swisher upped his average to .311 with three hits and five RBI last night. An All-Star ...
According to George King of the NY Post, the Mariners have been busy scouting the Yankees farm system in anticipation of the Yankees trying to trade for LHP Cliff Lee at the deadline this season.
A source told King that they are interested in minor league infielder Eduardo Nunez plus one of the Yankees minor league catchers (Triple-A catcher Jesus Montero is their top prospect and Double-A catcher Austin Romine is their second best prospect. Catchers Gary Sanchez and JR Murphy are also elite ...
According to George King of the NY Post , the Yankees have scouts following the Houston Astros in hopes that they will be interested in trading their first baseman Lance Berkman .
The Astros are currently in last place in their division, and Berkman is owed $14.5 million this year plus a $2 million buyout on an option. Making things interesting is that Berkman has been with the same team his entire career, and he has a full no-trade clause. So, he would have to approve of any deal to the ...
Since the Yankees lost their first game against Baltimore on April 27 they have had little trouble handling the Orioles. On Tuesday night, New York hit three home runs, including a grand slam, en route to a 12-7 win at Camden Yards.
New York improved to 17-3 in their last 20 games against Baltimore while the Orioles lost for the 11th time in their last 12 games.
The Yankees immediately scored in the top of the first off Orioles starter Kevin Millwood (0-7). ...
Day 2 of the draft is over. Today was rounds 2-30. So far The Yankees signed 12 high schoolers, 18 college students, 13 position players, 15 right handed pitchers, and two left handed pitchers.

I'm beat, so I'm going to go with bullet points on this one.
This wasn't as close as the 12-7 score appears. The Yanks jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two and a half. Then, after the O's cut the lead to 6-3, the Yanks sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run seventh to put the game away. The O's would score four more against Chad Gaudin, but the game was really never in doubt.
Phil Hughes was solid over six innings on his way to his ...
In the Second and Third rounds of the draft, the Yankees selected SS/OF Angelo Gumbs of Torrance (California) High School and 3B Robert Segedin out of Tulane University. Gumbs was taken 89th in the second round and Segedin was the 112th pick in the third round.
Baseball America (subscription required) has some really good things to say about the 6'0", 200 pound, Gumbs. They say he's fast, has a great arm, and makes "spectacular" plays in the field. His tools, they say, are "impressive but not overwhelming," though his ...
New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has continued to struggled this season. Typically a slow starter that stumbles through rough Aprils, Teixeira usually gets it going by this point in the season.
As of June 8, Teixeira is batting a meager .210, barely hanging above the Mendoza Line .
He continues to stay calm and focused while not getting concerned about his low average. The Yankees first baseman went as far as to say his past performances should say enough.
“I’ve been through plenty of ups and downs and the ...
Here's some quotes from Amateur Scouting Director Damon Oppenheimer via Chad Jennings about first-round Yanks' pick Cito Culver:
“I've had basically over 100 years of scouting experience...go in and see this kid.”
“We’ve been able to see him play for a long time. We’ve probably got a couple of hundred at-bats from him… We were ahead of the game because we knew so much about him.”
“He really wants to be a Yankee. I think that we’re going to get him. We should get him signed and get him out playing really soon.”
The ...
New York Yankees, meet the next Derek Jeter. 17-year-old shortstop Christopher "Cito" Culver was drafted last night by the Yankees as the 32nd overall draft pick.
Rochester native Culver is only the second high school shortstop to get drafted by the Yanks in the first round since Jeter in 1992, and CJ Henry in 2005.
The Yankees will look for the Irondequoit High School senior to develop into the likes of his favorite player: Jeter.
Culver certainly has the tools to accomplish this daunting task. The switch-hitter batted .561, had 9 HR's, and ...
