The other day, the Yankees got bad bullpen news when Alfredo Aceves suffered a setback. Today they get some more, as Nick Johnson felt pain in his wrist while taking batting practice. He is being sent back to New York for further tests; this could mean the end of his season.
Nick Johnson has clearly become an experiment gone bad. Some injuries were expected, but he’s barely contributed at all this season. He’s on a one-year $5.5 million deal with a mutual option that isn’t likely to get picked up ...
Nick Swisher narrowly won the Final Vote over Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis and will be on the 2010 American League All-Star Team.
Swisher made a big push on Twitter today using #SendSwish to get followers to choose him. He also gave his fans a big thanks after it was announced that he’d be playing in the midsummer classic.
Swisher is having a career year this season:

Mike Axisa of River Ave Blues came up with a crazy idea for a trade that I don’t think is so crazy: Javier Vazquez to the Phillies for Jayson Werth . Furthermore, the trade would open up a spot in the rotation for the Yankees to land Cliff Lee .
It all started with these (two ) tweets from Buster Olney of ESPN:
Heard this: The Phillies are casting a wide net and talking with a lot of teams about possible matches for Jayson Werth. They ...
The Yankees have targeted the bench as their area of weakness, but they continue to monitor the Cliff Lee trade talks just in case he falls to within their asking range.
So far, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated , the Mariners have asked for minor league catcher Jesus Montero plus two other prospects for Lee. So far, the Yankees aren’t biting and may be waiting for the price to drop to one of their other catching prospects Austin Romine, J.R. Murphy, or Gary Sanchez.
Heyman reports that ...
It looks like AJ Burnett may be back on track—he won 6-2 last night while holding the Athletics to just two runs over seven innings. Mark Teixeira continued his hot streak by smashing a three-run shot that helped put the Yankees ahead for good in the fourth inning.
Here are some notes:
AJ Burnett has now allowed 2 ER in his last 13.2 IP. How? He’s finally using his changeup .
Robinson Cano was probably the last to know, but he is indeed sitting out the HR Derby .
Minor league RHP Alan ...
After we analyzed the National League earlier in the week, now it’s time to take a look at the American League. We will start with the powerhouses in the American League East.
When it comes to the July 31st trade deadline, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are usually “in” on all the top trade candidates. This year should be no different. The Tampa Bay Rays will be active this trade season as well.
Here are the trade deadline needs of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays…
New York Yankees ...
After a miserable June, A.J. Burnett has apparently returned to form. Burnett limited Oakland to two runs over seven innings as New York topped Oakland, 6-2, Wednesday night at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
New York won their fifth straight while sweeping a three-game series in Oakland for the first time since May 13-15, 2005. Oakland only totaled four runs and 16 hits as they suffered their fourth three-game sweep of the season. Coming off 6.2 scoreless innings last Friday against Toronto, Burnett (7-7) allowed two runs on five ...
These rankings are based on a 300 point system, 150 for offensive production and 150 for pitching production. 30 points (one point for each team) is the highest total any team can receive in a given category. For instance, if the Rays lead the league in HR’s, they will get 30 points for that category.
The five offensive categories used:HR’s, RBI, Runs, Average, and SB’s
The five pitching categories used:
Wins, Saves, WHIP, ERA, and K’s
1.(↑1) Texas Rangers (48-33): Despite going just 2-4 last week, the Rangers remain at the top of the FPR ...
Most people make way too big a deal about the drop-off players experience after participating in the Home Run Derby. It’s more likely statistical regression than anything else.
Nevertheless, Yankee coaches did not want Robinson Cano participating in this year’s Home Run Derby, and it looks like they are getting their way.
According to Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News, Cano has pulled out of the Home Run Derby this year due to a minor, albeit unmentioned, back injury with which he’s supposedly been dealing.
Supposedly, Cano has had this injury ...
Where would the Yankees bullpen have been last season without Alfredo Aceves? Probably right about where they are right now without him. And LHP Manny Banuelos is one of the top pitching prospects in the organization.
What do these two players have in common? The Yankees signed both of them out of Mexico.
They actually have a third player they signed out of Mexico, and he could do for the bench what Aceves did to the bullpen.
Jorge Vazquez, 28, was signed by the Yankees on December 7, 2008 and has been ...
