Ivan Nova to Replace Javier Vazquez In Yankees’ Rotation

The Yankees were impressed enough with Ivan Nova's start Monday night in Toronto that he will replace Javier Vazquez next Sunday at Chicago. Vazquez, who has an ERA above five, will move to the bullpen and will be available starting Monday. Joe Girardi did not comment about using Nova for more than one more start, and did not say he is prepared to use a six-man rotation. "I'm disappointed, obviously, but I'm also not doing my job so I understand that part," Vazquez said. "Last time they put me in the 'pen, ...

Johnny Damon: Red Sox Claim Former Fan Favorite Off Waivers

Via the NY Post: The Red Sox have claimed Johnny Damon on waivers, but the Tigers outfielder must waive a no-trade clause to return to Boston. Damon said before Monday night’s game against Kansas City that it’s one of the toughest decisions of his career. If Damon waives the no-trade clause, the Red Sox and Tigers have 48 hours to complete a deal. The Tigers also have the option of pulling him back or letting him go to the Red Sox on the waiver claim and get nothing back. Damon, ...

Yankees Notes: Nova, Aceves, Marte, Pettitte, and More

The Yankees lost a tough one yesterday 3-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays as Ivan Nova made his first big league start. Nova wasn’t overpowering, but if it weren’t for a dominant 12 strikeout performance by Brandon Morrow the Yankees could have won this game. Here are some notes: Nova ran into trouble early when he allowed a homer to Jose Bautista in the 1st. He then raised some controversy in the 6th by throwing up and in on Bautista. Overall though he went 5.1 IP and allowed just ...

Buck Showalter’s Hiring Makes American League East Division of Managers

When Buck Showalter was named the Orioles' 17th full time skipper on July 29th, it signaled the completion of the American League East's stranglehold on the title of Division with the Best Managers. With Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay, Cito Gaston in Toronto, Joe Girardi in New York, Terry Francona in Boston and Showalter now in Baltimore, the AL East boasts a talented lineup of managers. Between them, they hold five World Series rings as skippers and four Manager of the Year Awards. Let's take a look at all their ...

New York Yankees: Dustin Moseley Can’t Beat theToronto Blue Jays Alone

After losing the first game 3-2, the New York Yankees need to win Tuesday night against the Blue Jays at Rogers Center. The Tampa Bay Rays have caught up to tie in the standings, and the Boston Red Sox are still very much alive. Translation...inter-division games can kill a team’s chances for playoff berth, so the Yankees cannot lose this series for starters. The Blue Jays are making things difficult against all AL East teams. Toronto is not making the playoffs this season, but in any other division, my bet is circumstances would ...

Making Umpires Better

Monday night’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays was a tough one to swallow – not just because the Yankees lost a close one, but because some of it was out of their control. In the 3rd inning, Eduardo Nunez threw a ball wide of first that Mark Teixeira made an amazing stretch on, and yet the umpire called the batter safe, despite replays clearly showing he was out. Naturally, the next batter hit a homerun, thus providing the difference in a 3-2 game. This wasn’t the only bad call of ...

Yankees Game Recap: Curtis Granderson, Derek Jeter, Brett Gardner

The Yankees have just lost the first game of a three-game set to the Blue Jays, 3-2. Here are my thoughts: Granderson’s AB One of the turning points in the game was a questionable strikeout call on Curtis Granderson in the top of the ninth inning. The graph shows it wasn’t that close, it was way out of the strike-zone. Jeter in the clutch One of the biggest arguments for Derek Jeter is that he is great in the clutch, and one of the biggest arguments against Alex Rodriguez is that he is horrible ...

Carter’s MLB Power Rankings-August 23: CC Sabathia New AL Cy Young Favorite

NOTE: team and player statistics updated through Monday morning, August 23 11:00 AM CT 1. New York Yankees (77-47)As every week goes by, I’m believing more and more that the Yankees are going to be the ones to take the AL East once again. And with C.C. Sabathia holding a strong 17-5 record with a 3.02 ERA and 151 strikeouts to this point, I say we have a new favorite for the AL Cy Young Award. 2. Tampa Bay Rays (76-48)The Rays continue to hold the MLB’s top road record at ...

Cliff Lee: With CC Sabathia Leading the Way, Is Lee To Yankees a Done Deal?

A story in today's New York Post quotes CC Sabathia after his 17th win yesterday, "I'm here," Sabathia said. "Hundred percent." Sabathia is referring to the clause in his contract to opt-out after next season. CC was not sure he or his family would like the hustle of New York, and being Californians, wanted the option to go back to the west coast. "I think you know I've built a house here, right?" CC said. "My kids go to school here. We live here year round. So I'm not going anywhere." That is great news ...
