The 2010 MLB season has officially reached the stretch.
As we peruse the standings we have a few new things of interest to note.
First, the Philadelphia Phillies have reclaimed not only the lead in the NL East, but also in the National League as a whole. Philadelphia (80-60) is the first team to reach the 80 win mark in the NL and riding one of the hottest records, since July, in baseball.
Next, the number one team in baseball is, of course, the world champion New York Yankees (86-53). The Yankees really haven't ...
Yahoo Sports and ESPN are reporting that there are six teams that are taking looks at Japanese star Yu Darvish. It is not a 100% decision by Darvish to make the move to the United States, but the teams are already lining up.The system used to sign him would be very much like the Daisuke Matsuzaka system where there is a bidding war. It takes up quite a bit of money as learned by the Red Sox, but it could all payoff. Dice-K was a lot of hype due to the ...
There has never been a more successful quartet of players than Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, and Jorge Posada who have won a combined 19 World Series together.
What makes this foursome so special is that they have won those rings on the same team they all came up with, the New York Yankees. Aside from Andy Pettitte's three year stint in his home state of Texas with the Houston Astros, they have all spent their entire career's in Yankee pinstripes, which is amazing for any era in sports, but ...
In a year in which Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter have struggled to live up to their own standards, Robinson Cano has become the star of the New York Yankees offense, combining excellent hitting and solid defense at second base and establishing himself as one of the elite players in the American League. Not bad for a guy whose dad, former Astros pitcher Jose Cano, posted an ERA over 5.00 during his only major league season.Jose Cano is just one in a long list of professional athletes who have been significantly ...
I guess none of us should be surprised that the Boston Red Sox hype machine/cheerleading squad out of Bristol has published yet another piece claiming that Derek Jeter is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. That group of tools lost any sense of objectivity on the matter many, many years ago.Once the Red Sox captured the title in 2004, it was like any and all sense of a need to be impartial was ripped away, and they have done nothing but sit there in the background screaming, ...
Alex Rodriguez locked in on a Brian Matusz offering Monday and unleashed the instantly-recognizable swing that has always seemed too easy, too effortless, to do any real damage. But we know better by now. Rodriguez cocked his head to follow the flight of the ball then flashed his trademark "Trust me, I'm awesome" glance into his own dugout, always the sign that he knows he got all of it.If it were the old Stadium, the ball would have landed snugly in the non-bastardized version of Monument Park. In the new house, ...
The dog days of August have come and gone, along with my 33rd birthday and my dad’s 60th birthday. The month of August was a very, very interesting one for me and for baseball. It was definitely a month of highs and lows.
Let’s take a look at the top 10 things we learned about baseball in the month of August…
10. Alex Rodriguez hits his 600th home run.
On August 4th (the date of my dad’s birthday, actually), New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player ever ...

On Friday, Jerry Crasnick tweeted that Jayson Werth has parted ways with agent Jeff Borris. Werth was cagey about it when asked over the weekend, denying that he has left Borris and Beverly Hills Sports council. That’s likely a matter of semantics, however, because Crasnick’s source says Werth is “shopping” for new representation. I’m hearing the same thing.
What else I’m hearing: the front-runner is Scott Boras, with whom Werth is “way down the road,” according to my sources, and ...

Maybe it is not a mirror image, but Buck Showalter admits becoming manager of the Orioles feels a bit like when he once became manager of the Yankees.
“It does [resemble it] a little bit,” Showalter said yesterday in The Bronx. “[There are] some similarities. ”Showalter has returned to the AL East after a 15-year hiatus. He has returned to managing any team after a 3½-season break. The 54-year-old skipper managed his first game with the Orioles on Aug. 3, and they promptly won his first four games ...
Ah, it's good to be back... Last Night Rewind
Keep an eye on Ryan Kalish in deeper leagues heading in to next season. Kalish has shown the ability to hit and is working on adjustments to the big-league game. He hit another grand slam last night and stole two bases, giving him three in his short stint. Kalish is likely to stick at this point heading in to 2011, and could be seen as a 20-20 player as early as next season.
Corey Hart finds himself on a recent tear, going ...
