New York Yankees Grades at the 2014 Three-Quarter Mark

The New York Yankees are 61-57 through 118 games, and with three-quarters of the season behind us, it's time for the Bombers to brace themselves for what is sure to be a chaotic stretch run. Memories of the early days in Derek Jeter's career will certainly make for some nostalgia-filled nights at Yankee Stadium, but the task at hand is to make the playoffs in the Captain's final season. Given the rash of injuries this team has suffered both offensively and in the pitching staff, it's remarkable to see that they're floating ...

Brandon McCarthy’s Rebirth Keying Yankees’ Defiant Postseason Chase

Where would the Yankees be right now if not for Brandon McCarthy? With CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova out for the season with injuries, and Masahiro Tanaka on the disabled list attempting to stave off Tommy John surgery, the Yankees decided to acquire McCarthy from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 6 in exchange for left-hander Vidal Nuno. Since then, McCarthy, 31, has provided much-needed stability to a depleted Yankees rotation, going 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 36-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 36.2 innings over six starts. Meanwhile, his performance has allowed the ...

How Are Yankees Staying in Thick of the Playoff Race with Gutted Roster?

The New York Yankees have had a long, strange trip through the 2014 season. Think back to the All-Star break: Whichever metaphor you prefer—underwater, sinking, stuck in the mud—they had become a representation of the overspending, injured, mediocre ballclub in the 21st century. Having lost 10 of their final 16 heading into the break, they were eyeing baseball's second half at 47-47 with just one of their five Opening Day starters remaining healthy—their 39-year-old, too. Pitching had never been the problem, either. The front office appeared caught between haplessly believing in this 2014 ...

Tigers vs. Yankees Live Blog: Instant Reactions and Analysis

The Detroit Tigers had an opportunity to break through in the second inning, but the New York Yankees scored first and took a 2-1 lead they would preserve through the final pitch. David Robertson sealed off an impressive outing by Brandon McCarthy, who pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning and allowed just one run in six innings. The highlight of the game came in the bottom of the third, when Ezequiel Carrera robbed Jacoby Ellsbury of a few RBIs with a diving catch on the warning track. That ...

Grading New York Yankees’ Trade Deadline Performance

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had a very busy month of July. The 2014 non-waiver trade deadline has come and gone. The Yankees weren't the talk of the deadline—the Boston Red Sox were, however—but Cashman made some very good moves to bolster his roster and prepare his squad for the stretch run. Cashman made two trades on Thursday and five others during the month of July. High profile or not, most of the moves he made have paid dividends already. We won't be able to dish out final grades for these ...

Yankees Make Small Deadline Moves, Add Drew and Prado

Thursday's action-packed, non-waiver trade deadline saw the New York Yankees add Stephen Drew and Martin Prado. Surprisingly, the archrival Boston Red Sox dealt Drew to the Yankees, as first reported by ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes. The Yankees then got Martin Prado from the Arizona Diamondbacks for prospect Peter O'Brien, a story that was broken by the YES Network's Jack Curry. While neither of these deals fall under the blockbuster department, they do potentially upgrade the roster. Drew, a shortstop, will be the everyday second baseman from here on out. His .176 average is far from impressive, ...
