into Sunday afternoon's game with the Tampa Bay Rays, the New York Yankees knew they had to win.
It was the crucial and deciding game of the three-game set at Yankee Stadium and the Yankees knew they needed to beat their division rivals. They needed to win to hold onto their very small division lead over the Baltimore Orioles—a lead that is just one game.
And on Sunday, the Yankees did just that, knocking off the pesky Rays for a 6-4 victory to take the series.
Russell Martin continues to have a strong September as he hit a big three-run home run off Matt Moore that made the score 5-0 in the third inning.
Those runs were very important in the game because Tampa did not go away so quietly and battled the Yankees.
