Handicapping Yankees’ Hotly Contested Battle for No. 5 Rotation Spot

class="ui-droppable">In baseball, momentum is only as good as the next day's starting pitcher. For the New York Yankees, that adage has taken on increased importance this spring as the battle for the No. 5 rotation spot rages on in Tampa, Fla.

The top of manager Joe Girardi's rotation—CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and Masahiro Tanaka—will earn a combined $61 million during the 2014 season. Ivan Nova, slated to make $3.3 million, could emerge as a top-tier starter from the No. 4 role. 

Yet in the hotly contested AL East standings, New York's No. 5 starter spot will be a major key to success or failure this season.
